New Recycling and Food Waste Regulations

What the New Rules Mean for Businesses
Businesses must sort waste at the source before collection. This means ensuring recyclable materials and food waste are properly separated on-site. Additionally, the use of macerators and similar food waste treatment devices will no longer be permitted.
Waste Categories to Separate
Businesses must manage waste according to the following streams:
- Food Waste – All food waste must be disposed of sustainably.
- Dry Mixed Recyclables – Includes paper, cardboard, plastics, metals, and other recyclable materials.
- General Waste – Non-recyclable waste falls under this category.
Failure to comply may result in financial penalties. From April 2025, members of the public and other stakeholders will be able to report non-compliance to the Environment Agency.
Who Must Comply?
The new regulations apply to businesses, public sector organisations, and third-sector institutions with 10 or more employees, including:
- Restaurants & cafés
- Offices & co-working spaces
- Schools & educational institutions
- Hospitals & healthcare facilities
- Transport hubs (train stations, airports, etc.)

Tailored Waste Management Solutions
To meet these new requirements, businesses may need to update their waste management systems. This includes providing appropriate bins suited to their operations, from compact, customer-facing bins to high-capacity containers for back-of-house use.
